Increasing organic traffic 9,900% with AI
Comfy bed, or symbol of an internet nightmare?
Imagine that you are working with a brand in a crowded niche for organic search. The space is so competitive that FastCompany called it a “war” and an “internet nightmare.”
How would you get your content to rank in organic search results?
Tomorrow Sleep, a direct-to-consumer mattress brand from Serta Simmons Bedding, faced this exact challenge.
The company launched after DTC disruptors like Casper, Tuft & Needle, and Purple became established companies. Between established DTC brands - and the sea of mattress review affiliates - the search engine results pages for high-intent “mattress” keywords were crowded. To make things more challenging, Tomorrow Sleep didn’t start creating content for a year after launch.
Tomorrow Sleep and their marketing agency, Social Media Sharks, turned to AI to kickstart their organic search growth.
To build a differentiated SEO strategy, Tomorrow Sleep used the AI-powered content strategy platform MarketMuse.
The first step was identifying keywords where Tomorrow Sleep would have the best chance of ranking. The company identified primary topics and related search keywords with MarketMuse’s keyword research tool.
One of the most common pitfalls of SEO is focusing on getting traffic from search engines instead of customers. The intent of a search matters. A person looking for “best mattress for back pain” is more likely to buy than someone looking for “when were mattresses invented.” The Tomorrow Sleep team prioritized keywords with higher searcher intent.
Once the company identified target keywords, it was time to plan the content. Google prioritizes SEO content that fully answers searchers’ questions. To compete with established players, Tomorrow Sleep need to create more comprehensive content than the existing articles.
An example of the content gap analysis from MarketMuse Compete.
Tomorrow Sleep used MarketMuse Compete to visualize gaps in the content that ranked in the top 20 search results for their target keywords. With that information, they could create content that “filled in the gaps”, and maximize their chances of ranking in search.
The strategy paid off. Within a year, Tomorrow Sleep increased organic traffic from 4k to 400k per month.

Generating keyword ideas with ChatGPT
Keyword research tools like Google Keyword Planner, Moz, Semrush, and Ahrefs are invaluable. However, it is likely that your competitors are using the same tools to find the same keywords.
ChatGPT can help you brainstorm new keyword opportunities.
Generate a list of high-intent SEO keywords focused on [topic or content cluster] for [a brief description of the organization and company goal]. The list should only contain the keywords and it should be easy to copy and paste into a keyword research tool.
Note: at this time, ChatGPT does not have access to search volume data and should not be used for quantitative keyword research.

Gray Lady Won’t Provide Training Content for AI: The New York Times updated its terms of service to prohibit the use of its content to train a machine learning or AI algorithm, or to develop “any software program.” The move comes as ChatGPT allowed sites to block its web crawler.
